The MTX Categories

When we refer to CONTEMPORARY we broadly mean ‘Modern Musical Theatre’ we have determined that to be anything first presented on stage 1960 onwards.

When we refer to LEGIT we broadly mean musicals first presented on stage which predate 1960.

We realise that there is a crossover and interpretation allows you to move your timeline, and we actively allow invention and creativity. If you decide to be creative with your entry, we would like you to enter it in one with the ‘soundscape’ you are making, ie ‘Maria’ from West Side Story would be LEGIT, even if it was performed with a modern feel and vibe to the original style orchestrations, but if it was a modern synth pop sound it would be considered CONTEMPORARY in its sound.

In addition modern musicals such as Top Hat which have the songs of Irving Berlin would be considered LEGIT in their sound, as they are the songs of Irving Berlin, although it was first presented on stage post 1960.

ALL ENTRANTS WILL BE JUDGED IN THE SAME 5 CATEGORIES

MORE INFO….

Acting through Song (ATS)

In this category the adjudicators will be looking at how you combine your dramatic and vocal talents to convey a narrative.

The song you select should be appropriate for age and range, and it can be open to interpretation and doesn’t have to stay within the confines of the original show, and should demonstrate new choreography/ staging, and not repertoire from an existing show.

Acting through Dance (ATD)

In this category, as well as looking at the technical dance capabilities of each dance and its merits, the performer will be critiqued also on their ability to convey a story or narrative through this.

The narrative can be incredibly simple or as complex as you’d like to make it, but what is important is that it is clear, and understandable, as well as being well performed with appropriate technical dance movements. Flare and dance-acro are allowed to be integrated, but this should not be the focus of the choreography and should be used to help convey the story.

The judges are looking at why the dance takes place, how it takes place and that the steps and style are appropriate to the music, age and ability of the performer.

Only in the ballet section may ‘Repertoire’ be used and only participants in the Pre SENIOR or SENIOR are permitted to be en pointe.

Acting through Text (ATT)

This category is about using the spoken word to convey the message, story or narrative of what the author has written. There is no breakdown between classical or modern literature. You can enter Shakespeare to Ben Elton. Please be advised that this is a family friendly completion and profanity* should be avoided.

Characterisation(s), clarity, diction and connection to material and performance will all be considered by entrants.

*Some pieces may be bleeped out or removed if the profanity is deemed inappropriate by MTX or any of the Judges please email if guidance is required info@musicaltheatrextra.com

Production (PRD)

This category is where all three skill sets are combined in a ‘triple threat’ capacity. Entrants should demonstrate song, dance, and acting collectively, and it is expected that the entrants will sing, dance and act at the same time during their performance.

The song selection, programme of choreography and styling should be appropriate for age and the music choice. New choreography should be created and not using anything from the repertoire of an existing show. Flare and dance-acro are allowed to be integrated, but this should not be the focus of the choreography and should be used to help convey the story. Characterisation(s), clarity, diction and connection to material and performance will all be considered by entrants.
